First BlueGen sale in the UK for Ceramic Fuel Cells

Australian-based Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd has sold its first BlueGen micro combined heat and power (mCHP) unit in the UK. Ideal Boilers will test and demonstrate the BlueGen gas-to-electricity solid oxide fuel cell unit at its product development and manufacturing facility in Hull.

BlueGen units generate electricity in the home far more efficiently than the current European power grid, thereby cutting energy bills and significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Connecting to existing natural gas pipes, the BlueGen system uses solid oxide fuel cell technology to convert mains gas into electricity. Over a year, each BlueGen unit – about the size of a dishwasher – can produce twice the electricity needed to power an average UK home.

Surplus electricity can be sold back to the grid under the UK’s new feed-in tariff, effective April 1, which pays homeowners 10p for every kWh of electricity generated plus an additional 3p for every kWh of electricity exported to the local power grid. BlueGen also produces enough heat to satisfy the average UK home’s daily needs for hot water.

Ceramic Fuel Cells is continuing to build its order book for BlueGen units from major utilities and other foundation customers in Europe, Japan, and Australia, including E.ON Ruhrgas and EWE in Germany, GasTerra in The Netherlands, and Mitsui & Co and Osaka Gas in Japan.

Using the same solid oxide fuel cell technology, CFCL is also developing fully integrated mCHP products with leading energy companies E.ON UK in the UK and GdF Suez in France.

Ideal Heating has more than 100 years’ experience of designing and manufacturing heating solutions for the trade, and relied on by homeowners across the UK. Its current range includes traditional domestic gas boilers and renewable technologies like solar thermal and air source heat pumps.
