2014 Grove Medal awarded to Professor David Wilkinson at University of British Columbia

The 2014 Grove Medal is being awarded to Professor David Wilkinson, at the University of British Columbia in Canada. The presentation of the Grove Medal and Professor Wilkinson’s plenary address will open the Fuel Cells 2014 Science & Technology conference, taking place 3–4 April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

This year’s Grove Medal, which is awarded in honour of Sir William Grove, the inventor of the fuel cell, is being awarded to Professor David Wilkinson, who holds the Canada Research Chair in Clean Energy and Fuel Cells at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Professor Wilkinson has been part of UBC’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering for a decade, and before that spent nearly 15 years building and leading Ballard Power Systems’ technological leadership in PEM fuel cells.

The 2012 Grove Medal was awarded to Professor Dr Hubert Gasteiger at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, while in 2010 it went to Professor J. Robert Selman at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

The Fuel Cells 2014 Science & Technology ConferenceA Grove Fuel Cell Event is taking place 3–4 April at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel in central Amsterdam. This biennial, research-oriented conference series is organised by Elsevier in collaboration with the Grove Steering Committee.

The conference will comprise a mix of plenary speakers and parallel technical sessions. The plenary speakers include Dr Mascha Smit (Nedstack, Netherlands), Niels Christiansen (Topsoe Fuel Cell, Denmark), Dr Balsu Lakshmanan (General Motors, USA), and Dr Nancy L. Garland (US Department of Energy).

The technical sessions will focus on PEMFCs at cell/component level, SOFCs at cell/component level, PEMFC electrocatalysis, novel fuels and electrolytes, modelling & control, and systems & applications. There will also be an extensive poster programme.
