REC installs three new farms in ‘solar power hotspot’

REC, the largest European supplier of solar panels globally, has installed three new utility scale installations in North Carolina, regarded as the solar power hotspot of the USA.

The projects, developed, engineered and constructed by Strata Solar LLC, are Rock Farm, which produces 6.65 MW, Mt. Olive Farm, 6.65 MW, and AM Best Farm, 6.4 MW.  Collectively, the farms are powered by 81,000 high-performing REC 250 Peak Energy solar panels and generate 31,320 MWhs of solar energy annually, providing electricity to 2,400 homes.

Each year the farms will offset approximately 13,380 tons of CO2, the company says. The installations are ground-mounted and cover an approximate area of 16 hectares. They were commissioned in the first half of 2013.

“We are committed to using best-in-class components,” said Markus Wilhelm, Strata Solar’s CEO. “We are impressed by the quality of REC solar panels, and also by the fact that REC keeps its delivery promises and stands behind its product.”

According to REC, the US solar power market continued to experience rapid growth in 2012, with 3.5 GW of new capacity installed during the year. Despite there being no national feed-in tariffs, a number of state and federal government-backed incentive schemes are in place.
