Linde and LiSEC launch new glass coating technology to improve solar energy yields

Linde Gases, a division of The Linde Group, has announced the launch of S-COAT, a highly innovative and cost effective anti-reflection (AR) coating technology which significantly increases light transmission values and resultant energy yields of solar modules.

Together with LiSEC, an Austrian based global company specialising in glass processing lines, Linde Gases Division has developed the new anti-reflection solar glass coating technology to deliver light transmission gains of around 3 percent on average – and up to 3.5 percent in peak conditions – as compared to identical glass substrates without such a coating.

The patented S-COAT coating process comprises applying a specially developed water-based chemical mixture onto the glass surface using an inert gas spraying technology, and results in a glass surface finish of controlled porosity, maximising light transmission.

“Solar module manufacturers are under pressure to optimise costs,” said UlrichHanke, Global Manager Marketing and Business Development, Metals and Glass, Linde Gases Division. “S-COAT is a highly economical solution for effectively improving energy yields as it provides significant advantages from both a capital and operating expenditure viewpoint, as compared to competing technologies.”

Linde said S-COAT can be installed into existing glass processing lines and operates at speeds up to 15 metres per minute, meaning no loss to productivity. “This important development means that customers can not only benefit from the best anti-reflective coating solution, but can do so at low cost and without disrupting manufacturing,” said Hanke.

In addition to that S-COAT has the benefit of proven durability, said the company. After the coating is applied, the glass sheets are tempered to create a highly damage and wear resistant finish for the solar module.

“S-COAT has been designed with the highest quality standards in mind, said Johann Weixlberger, Project Manager, LiSEC. “Our machinery not only ensures a fast and reliable production process, but results in a highly effective AR-coating as well as gentle and contactless glass handling.”

In recognition of Linde’s dedication to sustainability performance, in September 2012 the Group was added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI World). Analysts at the Sustainable Asset Management Group (SAM) recognised in particular the Group’s activities in the areas of climate change, environmental management systems and risk and crisis management.
