FERC approves 1 MW tidal project in NY

The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a Pilot commercial license to construct, operate, and maintain Verdant Power's 1 MW Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) Project in New York City, USA.

By Kari Williamson

Following a three-staged development approach beginning in 2013, the tidal power project is estimated to generate 2.4 GWh annually.

Verdant Power says it will install its 5th Generation Free Flow System, an updated version of the tidal power technology previously demonstrated in the East River.

According to trade organisation Ocean Renewable Energy Coalition, the potential for tidal power projects is up to 3 GW of installed capacity by 2025.
