European Association for Storage of Energy founded

The international non-profit association will promote the roles of energy storage as key enabling technologies for Europe’s transition towards a greener energy system.

By Kari Williamson

The formal constitution for the creation of the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) has been signed by European actors in the energy sector ranging from manufacturers and utilities to academic bodies.

The 13 founding members:

Alstom, DONG Energy A/S, EDF SA, EnBW AG, Enel S.p.A., E.ON AG, GDF SUEZ SA, Hitachi Power Europe GmbH, KEMA BV, RISØ DTU, RWE AG, Saft SAS, Siemens AG.

Energy storage could enable the integration of more renewable energy into the grid through balancing demand and supply, manage transmission and distribution, and aid energy efficiency.

The aim of EASE is to stimulate the development of energy storage technologies and applications through building a platform for the sharing and dissemination of knowledge and information and coordinating national activities.

EASE will work on technology and application related aspects of energy storage such as assessment of storage applications and development of storage technology roadmaps as well as addressing financial, economic and regulatory issues.

EASE springs out of a European Commission initiative looking for a consensual vision of the roles, technologies and potential applications of energy storage within the the EU Energy and Climate policy.
