Glastonbury goes solar

The home of the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Worthy Farm, has installed a 200 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system, making it the largest commercial solar PV installation in the UK.

Solar installer Solarsense managed the solar PV installation from the initial planning phase through to the commissioning. Over 1100 solar PV panels have been placed on the famous Worthy Farm “Mootel”, home to the farm’s cows whilst Glastonbury Festival takes place.

Worthy Farm owner and Founder of the Glastonbury Festival, Michael Eavis, says: “It’s wonderful. We now not only do the best festival in the world, we also have the best solar power system.”

Kerry Burns, General Manager at Solarsense, adds: “Worthy Farm is a landmark installation for the UK. Last year many farmers saw a 7% drop in income as commodity prices fell. But by installing PV onto the roof of outbuildings and barns, farmers can treat solar like another crop – but without all the hard work. Worthy Farm is a great example of what the future holds for the farming community.”

Despite recent bad weather, Eavis has already generated 40 kW of electricity from the solar PV installation and is on target to generate enough electricity to provide him with a guaranteed annual income of £60,000 for the next 25 years under the UK Governments feed-in tariff scheme.

Rock & Roll, It is great to see private individuals, taking up the FITs incentives. My only fear is that with large investments companies moving to start solar farms, it is only going to be a matter of time before, the FITs traffic will be reduced by the government, and private home owners & companies without solar PV, will be footing the bill. May be the government can start to think about capping solar farms, and saving more of the money for private home owners and companies? Explore Solar Ltd
