ABB inverters selected for 70 MW solar project in South America

New solar park marks the second-largest of its kind in the region, ABB says.

ABB supplied more than 45 of its ULTRA central inverters to the 70 MW solar power plant. The ULTRA inverters were selected for their robustness and ability to ensure the maximum energy output while operating in one of the harshest, desert environments, notorious for its dust and high heat.

“This installation is the second-largest project of its kind installed in South America,” said Paolo Casini, vice president Marketing Product Group Solar of ABB’s Power Conversion business unit. "We are very pleased that the ABB ULTRA has been selected as the inverter of choice for this demanding project.”

According to Casini, the ABB ULTRA inverter was selected for its ability to deliver high performance under the most extreme desert conditions in addition to its ability to meet the demanding maintenance requirements of the harsh environment. Another key factor that played into the selection of the product was its modularity. The project’s investors were specifically looking for this feature due to the project’s remote location and the need for easily managed maintenance. (The local utility also demanded a very strong reactive power control capability.)
