E.ON commissions large scale wind and solar projects in the US

New projects entail the start of commercial operation of the onshore wind farm Grandview I in the Texas Panhandle and the kick-off of a solar plant in Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

“The commissioning of a solar project and a wind farm demonstrates our capability to work successfully with a range of technologies," said Eckhardt Rümmler, CEO of E.ONs renewables division. "It is a major advantage that E.ON is able to handle different regimes and partners globally.”

Both projects were safely realized within time and budget.Grandview I, a joint venture between EON and GE Energy Financial Services, is a 211-megawatt wind farm located 26 miles east of Amarillo and harvests the extraordinary wind resource in this area. The wind farm uses 118 wind turbines and will generate enough electricity to power 64,000 homes, avoiding 482,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year, the equivalent of the annual emissions from 100,000 US passenger vehicles.

The Fort Huachuca solar plant in southern Arizona is now generating power to the grid. Built at the US Army Fort Huachuca in partnership with Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and the US Army Energy Initiatives Task Force (EITF), E.ON provided construction management and supply chain services for the project. TEP will own and operate the project and supply electricity to Fort Huachuca under a long-term contract.

The 18MW plant is the largest solar project built on a US Department of Defense military installation, according to E.ON.

To date, E.ON has developed 2.7 GW of wind projects in the United States since 2005.
