ABB launches PVS800-IS solar inverter station

Compact 2MW inverter designed for large-scale solar power generation.

ABB's new inverter station houses all the equipment that is needed to rapidly connect two central inverters to a medium-voltage (MV) transformer. Rated from 1.75 to 2MW, the new inverter station is designed for multi-megawatt PV power plants.

A station houses two 875 kW or 1000 kW ABB central inverters, PVS800, an embedded auxiliary power system and monitoring system. The PVS800 central inverters used in the station have high total efficiency, with one of the most compact and easy-to-maintain designs on the market, acccording to ABB. With flexible and integrated DC and AC connection cabinets, the inverter station can be rapidly and easily connected to the solar array and MV transformer.

“The inverter station combines ABB’s long experience of using power converters in demanding environments and applications, and is now packed into a highly reliable and easy-to-use package," Jyrki Leppänen, ABB's market management, solar inverters, explains. "At the same time, the station is cost-effective to transport and fast to install, offering our customers a very straightforward solution for large-scale PV power generation."

The housing is based on a standard steel-framed, insulated, 20-foot shipping container. The total package weighs ten tons, allowing easy and safe transportation and handling. The station’s thermal insulation and two-stage air filtering system enables operation in harsh temperature and humidity environments, and is designed for at least 25 years of operation. Depending on the size of the PV power plant, several ABB inverter stations can be combined to meet the needed capacity.

With a wide list of approvals and with advanced, flexible grid support functions, the inverter station meets all the applicable network connection requirements, regardless of where the project is located. To help meet bankability requirements and secure the highest return on investment, ABB supports its customers with a dedicated global service network providing a complete range of life cycle services in more than 60 countries.
