Siemens receives 270MW wind power order in Canada

It will install 124, 2.3MW wind turbines for the South Kent wind project in Canada.

The order was awarded by Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. (Samsung) and Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern), which are developing the 270MW project, located in Southwestern Ontario. When operating the wind farm will generate enough energy for up to 100,000 Canadian homes.

Installation of the SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines at the South Kent project is scheduled to begin this year, with the start of operations expected for spring 2014.

“This order reinforces our commitment to our North American factories and our trust in the mid-term stabilisation of these markets. We are proud to contribute to the development of wind power in Canada with our technology,” said Felix Ferlemann, CEO of the Wind Power Division of Siemens Energy.

Nacelles for this project will be assembled at the Siemens US facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. Blades for the wind turbines will be manufactured at the company’s Tillsonburg blade facility in Ontario, Canada.

According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, Canada is the ninth largest producer of wind energy in the world with a current installed capacity of roughly 5600 MW. Meantime, elsewhere in Ontario, another major renewable energy project – the Niagara Tunnel hydro power project – has also just come into service
