Siemens receives 270-MW wind power order in Canada

The order, from Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. and Pattern Energy Group LP is for the supply and installation of 124 wind turbines for the South Kent wind project in Canada.

The Samsung-Patten 270-MW project, located in Southwestern Ontario, will generate enough energy for up to 100,000 Canadian homes. The SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines to be used have a power rating of 2.3 megawatts (MW) each and a rotor diameter of 101 metres.

Installation of the wind turbines at the South Kent project is scheduled to begin this year, with the start of operations expected for spring 2014.

Nacelles for this project will be assembled at the Siemens U.S. facility in Hutchinson, Kansas. Blades for the wind turbines will be manufactured at the company’s Tillsonburg blade facility in Ontario, Canada.

According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, Canada is the ninth largest producer of wind energy in the world with a current installed capacity of roughly 5,600 MW. Siemens holds a leading position in the Ontario wind market.
