The 131MW Cimarron II wind farm in Gray County, will supply electricity to Kansas City Power & Light, under a 20 year power purchase agreement.

The completion comes a year after Duke Energy bought the Cimarron II project from CPV Renewable Energy, which owns the first phase of the development, Cimarron I.

In April, Duke Energy sold a 50% stake in the project to Japan’s Sumitomo, along with a 50% stake in a second Kansas wind farm under development, the 168MW Ironwood wind farm in Ford County. Construction on Ironwood started in autumn 2011.

Last year the company also announced plans to buy the 20MW Shirley wind project in Wisconsin from Central Hudson Enterprises, a move which it says will push its total generating capacity over the 1GW mark.

Duke Energy, which says it has invested more than $1.5 billion in wind and solar since 2007, operates nearly 1 GW of generating capacity at nine US wind farms – four in Wyoming, three in Texas, one in Colorado and one in Pennsylvania.
