Lufthansa trial runs out of biofuel

Lufthansa has to end its trial of bio-based aviation fuel as it has run out of certified biofuel.

By Kari Williamson

The biofuel trial has seen an Airbus A321 engine being powered by a 50:50 blend of regular fuel and biofuel over a 6 month period, counting 1187 flights between Frankfurt and Hamburg, Germany.

The last flight using the biofuel will be between Frankfurt and Washington on 12 January, according to Reuters.

Lufthansa will only continue the practical trial if we are able to secure the volume of sustainable, certified raw materials required in order to maintain routine operations,” Project Manager at Lufthansa, Joachim Buse, says.
