The Hydrogenics HySTAT™ 60 electrolyser is capable of producing 130 kg per day of pure hydrogen. It will be part of a complete electrolysis-based fueling station awarded to Carbagas, a subsidiary of the Air Liquide group.

The hydrogen station will be used to refuel five Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid buses operating in the city as part of the Clean Hydrogen in European Cities (CHIC) initiative, a European demonstration project for fuel cell buses.

The hydrogen fueling station, delivering ‘green’ hydrogen at 350 bar (5000 psi), will be based at the PostAuto bus garage in Brugg, in the northern canton of Aargau. PostAuto is the biggest public bus operator in Switzerland, with more than 2000 vehicles in service.

The Aargau fuel cell bus project will reduce noise and improve air quality in the canton by reducing harmful emissions from public transport. This hydrogen fueling station will deliver 100% green hydrogen, thanks to the use of green electricity generated by the local energy utility IBB using hydroelectric, solar, wind, and biomass.

This further demonstrating that a complete carbon-free chain using electrolysis has its place in the future energy mix for transport applications.

Hydrogenics is a leading developer and manufacturer of hydrogen generation and fuel cell products, with an electrolyser manufacturing operation in Belgium.

The company was recently selected to supply an electrolyser for a wind-hydrogen energy storage solution for the German city of Herten. The project will allow excess renewable energy to be stored as hydrogen for later use in a fuel cell.
