US invests US$250m in 51 solar projects in Thailand

The US Government's development finance institution, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), has approved US$250 million in financing to develop 51 solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants in Thailand.

By Kari Williamson

SunEdison Thailand, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials Inc, will use OPIC financing to construct the solar PV power plants, which will range in size from 1 MW to 50 MW, totalling 520 MW.

“We are proud to be supporting Thailand’s goals of shifting to clean, renewable sources of power. This project allows SunEdison to develop a pipeline of solar projects in Thailand that would otherwise require significantly more resources for OPIC to implement on a project-by-project basis,” says OPIC President and CEO Elizabeth Littlefield.
