Bioenergy project awarded US$132m loan guarantee

Abengoa Bioenergy Biomass of Kansas LLC (ABBK) has been awarded a US$132.4 million loan guarantee form the US Department of Energy (DoE) for the development of a commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in Hugoton, Kansas, USA.

ABBK’s parent company, Abengoa Bioenergy US Holding Inc, estimates the bioenergy project will fund approximately 300 construction jobs and 65 permanent jobs.

The bioenergy project is expected to convert approximately 300,000 tons of agricultural crop residues, including corn stover (stalks and leaves), into approximately 23 million gallons of ethanol per year using an enzymatic hydrolysis process.

The bioenergy facility will be self sufficient, using unconverted biomass to generate 20 MW of electricity to power the cellulosic ethanol plant.
