Deutsche Bahn goes for renewable energy

German rail company Deutsche Bahn (DB) is increasing its use of renewable energy such as wind power as it aims to become CO2 free by 2050.

By Kari Williamson

DB's utility company, DB Energy, is already buying wind power from utility swb in Bremen.

The rail company says it not only aims to protect the environment, but also to gain experience with fluctuating wind power and its effect on load management.

Te goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% over 2006 levels and increase the share of renewable energy to 35% by 2020. Renewable energy contributed 19.8% of the company's power needs in 2010.

Ultimately, DB hopes to have CO2 free rail transport by 2050.
