Under the long-term supply contract, RWE will supply German rail operator Deutsche Bahn with electricity generated by RWE Innogy's hydroelectric power plants in Germany. RWE Innogy is the renewables subsidiary of RWE.

The hydropower plants are based at the rivers Mosel, Saar, Rhine, Ruhr and Rur. RWE will use certified proofs of origin to show that the electricity supplied to Deutsche Bahn is renewable.

Dr Juergen Grossmann, CEO of RWE, says: "We are supplying a long-standing, important customer with large volumes of electricity from renewables, which is proof that we are well positioned in this area. And we will continue to grow. By 2013 alone, we will have invested just under €4 billion in expanding our capacity from renewables. In doing so, RWE is making a substantial contribution to ensuring that our electricity mix will be sustainable."

Deutsche Bahn's goal is to generate 100% of its electricity from renewables.

Dr Ruediger Grube, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, says: "Climate protection is very important to us, because trains are like no other form of transport in their representation of environmentally friendly mobility.”
