South Wales opens £38m wind turbine tower factory

A £38 million wind turbine tower factory is being opened in Mabey Bridge in Chepstow, South Wales, UK.

The wind turbine tower facility is creating 240 jobs and has a capacity for 300 towers per year. It is said to be the only wind turbine tower factory in the UK at the moment.

The facility has already entered a preferred supplier agreement with REpower, and is producing 9 steel wind turbine towers for the German wind giant.

Rick Eggleston, Managing Director of REpower UK, says: “We have been consistently impressed with the high quality of product at Mabey Bridge. Local procurement of the towers from a reliable UK manufacturer makes sense. REpower and Mabey Bridge will continue to have a productive and positive relationship as we both build our businesses in the UK.”

Maria McCaffery, CEO of RenewableUK adds: “This is an exciting landmark for the low carbon economy as it heralds the return of turbine manufacture to these shores. Britain is the windiest contry in Europe and it rightly has ambitious plans to deliver a low carbon economy by 2020. Mabey Bridge’s new plant will play a major role in that.”
