US EPA proposes an increase in renewable fuels

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a strategy for increasing the supply of renewable fuels in the USA as biofuels are poised to reach 36 billion gallons by 2022 under the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007.

EISA will establish four categories of renewable fuels:

  • Cellulosic biofuels;
  • Biomass-based diesel;
  • Advanced biofuels; and
  • Total renewable fuel.

In 2022, EPA’s biofuel proposal would require:

  • 16 bn gallons of cellulosic biofuels;
  • 15 bn gallons annually of conventional biofuels;
  • 4 bn gallons of advanced biofuels; and
  • 1 bn gallons of biomass-based diesel.

The thresholds for new categories would be 20% less greenhouse gas emissions for renewable fuels produced from new facilities, 50% less for biomass-based diesel and advanced biofuels, and 60% less for cellulosic biofuels, according to EPA.
