Germany’s Baltic 1 offshore wind farm commissioned

Germany’s first commercial offshore wind farm, the 48.3 MW EnBW Baltic 1, has been commissioned in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany.

By Renewable Energy Focus staff

The offshore wind farm was commissioned by EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg and consists of 21 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbines.

René Umlauft, CEO of the Renewable Energy Division at Siemens, says: “When it comes to offshore wind farms, Siemens is clearly the world leader, with more than 20 years of project experience.”

6 MW wind turbine

Umlauft continues: “We’ll soon be introducing a new wind turbine with a capacity of 6 MW. This new machine is gearless and is ideally suited for offshore wind farms.”

EnBW Baltic 2

Siemens will also build the 288 MW EnBW Baltic 2 offshore wind farm (formerly known as Kriegers Flak), which will consist of 80 Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbines.

Baltic 2 is slated for connection to the grid in 2013.
