Christian Kjaer, head of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), said that when the EU launched its roadmap to reduce emissions by 80-90% by 2050, “it failed to define what low-carbon is.”
If it means non-emission energy technologies, Kjaer pointed out that “we cannot build any more traditional power plants now, because they would be around until after 2050.”
Kjaer also took the opportunity to call for a single European electricity market. This was echoed by Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament: “Let us complete the single market for electricity as soon as possible,” he told the EWEA 2011 audience.
