Dutch researchers help Kuwaiti solar PV

The Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) will advise and support the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) in setting up and equipping a test facility for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

By Renewable Energy Focus staff

Kuwait does not currently produce electricity from solar PV. KISR will use the test facility to test solar PV panels and accompanying electronics for use in Kuwaiti conditions.

The KISR has been commissioned by the Government of Kuwait to acquire knowledge about solar PV to be able to advise industry and consumers in Kuwait on the use of solar PV.

The cooperation agreement includes training of staff at KISR, the Ministry of Electricity and Water and the Ministry of Education. The two institutions will also develop a roadmap for sustainable energy.

ECN will also benefit from the partnership as it presents the opportunity to test different solar panels in the extreme weather conditions of a desert area – including heat, sand and cold.

The two institutions aim to conduct more joint projects in the field of sustainable energy in the future.
