UK geothermal project gets funding

A project to refit the Southampton District Energy Scheme’s deep geothermal well has received £200,000 from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

The geothermal facility gets its heat from a 1.7 km deep spring, supplemented by a combined heat and power (CHP) biomass and conventional boiler system.

The Southampton District Energy Scheme, operated by COFELY District Energy in partnership with Southampton City Council, has been in operation since 1986.

The Scheme produces over 40 GWh of heat per annum, 26 GWh of electricity from the CHP plant, more than 7 GWh of chilled water.
