A story insisting that the world’s largest tidal energy project - to be built across the Severn estuary from Somerset to South Wales, UK – is to be scrapped as it falls prey to public funding cuts from the current Government, The Guardian wrote last week.

The controversial £20 billion tidal power plan, if successful, would be able to generate up to 5% of the UK’s energy. However according to the Guardian: “The private sector is unlikely to back the 10-mile barrage without government money.”

Nevertheless, the DECC insists that this is mere “speculation” and that the department is in the process of looking at the feasibility study for possible tidal power schemes in order make a decision.

This study continues to explore five proposed tidal power schemes for the Severn Estuary of which the front-runner is the £23bn Cardiff to Weston barrage project. A spokesman from the department claims that: “no final decisions have been made.”  An announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
