The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), as an agent of the 9 participants in the Joint Wind Measurement Program, signed the contract with GL Garrad Hassan, which will provide an energy assessment for the wind farm project.
The wind power project is part of the Egyptian plan to generate 20% of the country's electricity from renewable sources by 2020.
The wind measurement project will start in September this year. The monitoring period is expected to run for a minimum of one year with wind speed analysis and energy assessment work to follow to support the individual bids of the shortlisted developers.
Egypt has significant potential for wind power, especially in the areas of the Gulf of Suez and it is intended that the current 550 MW of wind capacity be increased to 7.2 GW by 2020, GL Garrad Hassan said.
