Researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK aim to make use of a much wider range of vibrations from the environments we live and work in than is currently possible. It is hoped that within five years ‘energy harvesting’ could be powering many more of our devices, from heart monitors to cell phones.

German-based Heliocentris Fuel Cells AG reports that its preliminary revenue figures for the nine months to September 30, 2009 are up 33% on the same period in 2008. The revenues of €2.27 million (US$3.4 million) came despite a difficult market environment.

Connecticut-based United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) recently achieved the first flight of a hydrogen/air fuel cell powered rotorcraft. The successful technology demonstration was accomplished using a remote-controlled model electric helicopter, modified to incorporate a custom proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power plant.

The US Naval Research Laboratory’s Ion Tiger, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell unmanned air vehicle (UAV), has set another unofficial flight endurance record for a fuel cell powered flight. The latest test flight, on November 16–17, lasted 26 hours and 1 minute carrying a 2.3 kg (5 lb) payload.

Vancouver International Airport is the second of two Canadian airports in a hydrogen and fuel cell demonstration project led by Air Liquide Canada. The Vancouver airport will deploy several hydrogen transportation technologies in shuttle buses, as well as passenger and utility vehicles provided by the Vancouver Airport Authority and Air Canada.

The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus has made its first appearance in its future operating location of Hamburg in Germany. From next year the Hamburg transit agency will operate 10 of these fuel cell hybrid buses, as well as 20 Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL fuel cell cars.

BASF is realigning its business for the fuel cell market, by concentrating its competencies for the production of high-temperature membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) at the BASF Fuel Cell Inc facility in Somerset, New Jersey, USA. Operational activities at the BASF Fuel Cell GmbH site in Frankfurt, Germany will be discontinued effective December 31, 2009. BASF plans to close the Frankfurt site in the course of 2010.
